The Arcade which opened in late 2017 originally contained a series of shops and business; the client’s requirements for the space were to combine a Students’ Union shop, a cafe and a cultural interface space within which public exhibitions and informal learning could take place. This resultant design presents a clear manifestation of how the university is seeking to open up and share its interests with a broader audience.

Our interventions respect the listed interior, and we carefully specified materials to complement this beautiful interior using stone, timber and copper. The joinery within the café, shop & entrance area shares an approach to detailing and material choice to help unify the space.

Since opening, the Arcade has been popular with students and academics alike, who use it as a place to work and meet. The new foyer has become a stimulating atmosphere in which conversation and collaboration naturally take place.
